Apheresis
Highlands Oncology provides apheresis services to the community. This is usually performed on patients who are hospitalized. Apheresis is the process of extracting blood components from the blood stream with the help of an apheresis machine. This machine is a cerntrifuge that separates blood into its components which includes plasma, platelets, or white blood cells. Apheresis is used to treat certain diseases. The blood components being removed are usually the cause of the disease. Specially trained nurses under the direction of a physician operate the apheresis machine.
