Genetic Testing

Genetic testing can identify genetic variations that cause inherited cancers.  Inherited cancer risk means cancer can occur in families.  The DNA that is passed from a parent to a child may carry a gene which may cause cancer.  Knowing if you carry the gene will allow you and/or your family to take action to reduce their risk.

If you would like to know if you a candidate for genetic testing, please complete the following questionnaire and bring it with you the next time you are in the clinic. One of our Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) will review the questionnaire.  Based on your personal and family history of cancer, you may be a candidate for further screening and genetic testing.  If you are a candidate, we will call you to schedule an appointment.  When you meet with the APN, she will outline your family’s cancer history and educate you about genetic testing.  Gene testing may or may not be performed.  However, if you are a candidate for genetic testing, your blood will be drawn.  Your blood will then be sent to a laboratory where they specialize in gene testing.  When your results are available, you will be provided with information regarding cancer prevention.

Currently we perform genetic testing for:

  • Hereditary breast and ovarian cancer
  • Hereditary colon cancer
  • Hereditary melanoma
